This list is spread out. It runs from Riverside down to Temecula and up into the high desert, so check the miles before you pick. The closest big one is Castle Dark in Riverside, a theme park event with three haunted mazes, scare zones and unlimited rides. Heads up: buy online. An any-day ticket is $19.99 online and $49.99 in the park. The Haunted Harvest in Chino puts six haunted houses inside a two-acre corn maze, which is a pretty great idea. FYI, you also need a separate Frosty's Forest admission to get in.

The odd one is the Haunted Mansion Haunt in Trabuco Canyon, a free fan-made home haunt built around Disney's Haunted Mansion. Weeknights have no actors, which is nice for younger kids, but reservations are mandatory. Temecula is the ghost tour town, with two walks through Old Town, and one of them hands you an EMF meter. If you only want the scariest thing out here, make it Mansion of Lost Souls, also in Temecula. A front-of-the-line pass is $11 on top of the $22 ticket.
