Two theme parks run Halloween around here. Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood packs in eight haunted houses plus the Terror Tram, and Knott's Scary Farm in Buena Park bills itself as Southern California's longest-running Halloween theme park event. Both say they're not recommended for kids under 13. Want something stranger? Delusion: Den of the Mosquito is an interactive horror play where you crawl and climb through tight spaces. It's 18 and up, runs $143 to $155, and you need a photo ID. Not cheap. There's also a little cluster of haunted car washes in Anaheim, where you sit in your locked car while actors jump out of the fog.
The ghost tour list is long, and a lot of it is true crime with a few dead movie stars mixed in. There are several walks in Hollywood, a two-mile murder tour downtown, and more in Pasadena, Santa Ana and Old Town Orange. If you've got little kids, I'd start with Sea Scare! Monsters of Myth at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, a one-night Poseidon quest with trick-or-treating and a family-friendly haunted house. Plan ahead, though: it can sell out, so buy online.
