Most of the Tacoma-area scares are out in the woods. If you only do one, I'd pick Maris Farms Haunted Woods in Buckley, with more than 70 actors on a 35-minute trail through corn and dark forest. General admission is $45, and they say it's a no-touch haunt. Wear boots, it gets muddy. My Haunted Forest in Vaughn goes medieval, with handcrafted sets, sorcery and fire effects. Plan ahead, though: from 6 to 7 p.m. it's family-friendly, and after 7 it's 10 and up.
Wild Waves Fright Fest in Federal Way is the theme park option, with haunted houses, scare zones and rides in the dark. Heads up: no backpacks, only small clear bags, and anyone under 18 needs an adult 21 or older with them. In Tacoma itself, there's an underground haunt that's pitch dark and recommended for 12 and up. Down near Olympia, Rutledge Haunted Maze is a dark, winding path through the woods with live scare actors. No heels, sandals or flip-flops, and they don't recommend it under 10.
